Manitoba has no credit freeze

Only Quebec and Ontario residents can freeze a credit file. Place an alert instead. With Equifax’s Identity Alert, a lender in Manitoba or Ontario must check it is you. With its other alert, or in any other province, a lender is asked to check but does not have to.

Call Equifax on 1-800-465-7166 and TransUnion on 1-800-663-9980. Each places its own alert, and neither tells the other.

a credit freeze a block that stops a credit bureau sharing your file with a new lender

Ontario and Quebec law let you ask Equifax and TransUnion not to give your file to a lender who would open new credit. Neither bureau charges for it, and each has to be asked separately. Equifax calls it Credit Lock. Everywhere else, the option is a fraud alert instead.

If the money went into an investment

The Manitoba Securities Commission

1-800-655-5244, toll free within Manitoba, or 204-945-2548. In writing, securities@gov.mb.ca. There is also a fraud tip line, which the Commission writes as 1-855-FRAUDMB and which dials as 1-855-372-8362.

Check registration before money moves, and report an investment that has already gone wrong.

To talk to someone about abuse

The Seniors Abuse Support Line

1-888-896-7183, within Manitoba. Weekdays 9am to 5pm.

Klinic Community Health Centre runs it, not the government, so a call does not open a government file.

If the person is in a hospital or a care home

The Protection for Persons in Care Office

1-866-440-6366, toll free, or 204-788-6366 in Winnipeg. For a teletypewriter (TTY), 204-774-8618, or 1-800-855-0511.

This office covers adults in a hospital, a personal care home or another health facility the province designates. For a person living at home, call the Seniors Abuse Support Line.

When somebody cannot decide any more

The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba

1-800-282-8069, toll free, or 204-945-2700 in Winnipeg and 204-726-7025 in Brandon. In writing, PGT@gov.mb.ca, which is the Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT).

It manages money and makes personal decisions for adults who are not mentally capable of making decisions on their own.

What it is not. This office is not a fraud line, and does not open a file because money was lost.
