Freezing the credit file

Ontario now has a credit freeze, and it is free

Since 1 July 2026, Ontario residents can freeze their credit file at Equifax and at TransUnion, free. A freeze does not change your score.

How to place one. Ask each bureau separately. At Equifax, through myEquifax, by telephone on 1-866-828-5961, or by mail. At TransUnion, go to ocs.transunion.ca or telephone 1-800-663-9980. You can remove it the same ways.

From 1 July 2027, Ontario requires the bureaus to let you lift a freeze for a short time; Equifax’s form offers this now.

a credit freeze a block that stops a credit bureau sharing your file with a new lender

Ontario and Quebec law let you ask Equifax and TransUnion not to give your file to a lender who would open new credit. Neither bureau charges for it, and each has to be asked separately. Equifax calls it Credit Lock. Everywhere else, the option is a fraud alert instead.

If the money went into an investment

The Ontario Securities Commission

1-877-785-1555, toll free, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm Eastern. TTY 1-866-827-1295.

Before any money moves, check that whoever is selling the investment or giving advice is registered. If you think it is a scam, report it.

What it does not do. It does not normally get money back for investors.

To talk to someone at any hour

The Seniors Safety Line

1-866-299-1011. TTY 1-866-299-0008. Twenty-four hours, seven days a week. A live counsellor, in over 200 languages.

A counsellor offers emotional support, safety planning, information and referrals. It takes calls about an older person being abused or neglected, including somebody taking or misusing their money. Family and friends can call too.

When to call it. When you want to talk it through before reporting anything.

When somebody cannot decide any more

The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee

Call 1-800-891-0504, toll free, if you think somebody can no longer make their own decisions and could come to serious harm because of it, including losing money. For a teletypewriter (TTY), 1-833-813-5696. Collect calls to 416-314-2801.

Or write to the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) at OPGT.Investigations@ontario.ca. It also makes financial decisions for adults found mentally incapable, and care decisions when nobody else can.

What it is not. Not a fraud line, and not for a competent adult making a decision their family disagrees with. Incapacity is a legal finding, not an opinion about somebody’s judgement.
