Who to call in Prince Edward Island

If someone could borrow in your name

Prince Edward Island has no credit freeze

Only Quebec and Ontario residents can freeze a credit file. Here, you can place a fraud alert instead. It asks a lender to check it is you before giving credit.

Call Equifax on 1-800-465-7166 and TransUnion on 1-800-663-9980. Each places its own alert, and neither tells the other.

a credit freeze a block that stops a credit bureau sharing your file with a new lender

Ontario and Quebec law let you ask Equifax and TransUnion not to give your file to a lender who would open new credit. Neither bureau charges for it, and each has to be asked separately. Equifax calls it Credit Lock. Everywhere else, the option is a fraud alert instead.

a fraud alert a note on the credit file asking a lender to check who they are talking to

It asks; it does not stop anything on its own. A lender is meant to make contact and confirm identity before approving credit in your name. Each bureau keeps its own file, so one placed at one does nothing at the other. A bureau may charge for placing one.

If the money went into an investment

The Financial and Consumer Services Division

902-620-3870, the division’s own line, or 902-368-4550 for general inquiries. Department of Justice and Public Safety, Charlottetown.

It is the same office as Consumer Services, so one call covers an investment or a consumer complaint.

Before the money moves. Search the seller’s name on the Canadian Securities Administrators’ registration search. It covers every province, and it is free.

For a consumer complaint, or the ombuds office

Information, consumer complaints, and the ombuds office

The Seniors’ Line is 1-866-770-0588, toll free. Consumer Services, for complaints about a local business, is on 902-368-4550, or ccs@gov.pe.ca. OmbudsPEI is on 902-288-1105.

Consumer Services takes complaints in writing, not by telephone. Call to find out what to send.

Reporting abuse of an adult

The Adult Protection Program

Report neglect or abuse of an adult to any Home Care office. An Adult Protection Worker, not the home care staff, then investigates under the Adult Protection Act. Your name is kept from the adult you are reporting about.

Money counts here. The programme lists financial abuse, the unauthorized or improper use of financial resources, among the kinds it answers.

When somebody cannot decide any more

The Public Trustee

902-368-6281. The Public Guardianship Program, for adults who cannot make their own personal decisions, uses the same number.

It manages the money of people who cannot manage their own, when there is no trusted family member or friend to do it.
